What you’ll find in this category

It’s a common misconception among young drivers that the first car they’ll become the proud owner of will have about as much street cred as Simon’s Cinquecento in The Inbetweeners.

We’re not dissing the little Fiat by any means, but we’ll agree to go as far as saying that it’s not exactly a looker. Nor is it the ideal size to haul your mates around in. Unless you’re 12. (In which case you shouldn’t be driving).

We’ve heard more than a few learner drivers who are desperate for wheels say “I’ll drive anything at all, once it’s not a Cinquecento”. The flipside is that although it has the above defects, it just so happens to tick the majority of first time drivers boxes in terms of their desired first wheels, whether they like it or not.

Yes it’s small, but that means it’s easy to grasp the dimensions of and use around town, without kerbing it or taking the side off other motorists cars in multi-stories. The majority of them on our shores also have an 899cc engine, meaning that insurance , tax and fuel costs are about as cheap as they come for any first car.

Have we mentioned the price yet? You can pick up an acceptable model for somewhere between €500 and €800, with an NCT.

If that hasn’t swayed you, then you’ll be happy to know that the rest of this First Wheels category is designed to help you find a cool, respected and reliable perfect first car which will hopefully keep the funny looks away.
